News from the Dartmouth College Tuck School of Business
“On November 30, the Tuck faculty voted unanimously in favor of broadscale changes to Tuck’s foundational first-year core curriculum.
“Central to this endeavor are structural changes to the academic calendar designed to meet the evolving and future needs of students and companies while preserving the core’s renowned rigor.
“These changes include an expanded orientation program to ensure students have an even richer and more vibrant start to their Tuck MBA experience; adjusted term lengths and new courses for Fall A and Fall B; a restructured winter term to allow for concentrated recruiting; a refined leadership framework; a new sequence of data analytics courses in Fall A and Fall B; and increased optionality with elective courses. Combined, these changes ensure that Tuck students continue to receive a truly exceptional first-year experience that academically is unquestionably up-to-date in both rigor and relevance.”

“A meaningful vote on whether to rule out a ‘no deal’ Brexit could now take place as late as March 12, less than three weeks before the UK is due to leave the EU.
“Experts from Aston Business School, Warwick Business School, and the University of Warwick found the UK economy relied more on foreign investment than any other G7 country.”
A Day In The Life Of A Boothie
News from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business
“As an Admissions Fellow, I receive a lot of questions about what a typical day is like at Booth. I can easily default to speaking about my classes, the guest lectures I attend, and the student activity events I go to at night, but so much of the life of a Boothie are the random interactions, quick conversations, and group meetings.
“That inspired me to create this video to provide an inside look at some of the smaller details of the Booth experience. Watch Kalyan Ray-Mazumder, ’19, as he progresses through a day in the life of a Boothie.”

Is Full Employment Sustainable?
News from INSEAD
“The United States’ economy is a few months short of beating its longest expansion ever, which took place from March 1991 to March 2001. As we approach this milestone, there are increasing concerns about the possibility of a recession in the coming years.
“Do economic expansions die of old age? Empirical evidence suggests that there is no clear correlation between the length of an expansion and the probability of a recession.”

The Other Side Of Entrepreneurship: MBAs Working In Venture Capital
News from the Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management
“Many MBA students return to b-school with the dream of starting their own company. But more and more students are also looking for jobs on the other side of entrepreneurship: venture capital and private equity. These firms seek out high-potential startups to invest in, with the hopes of great returns farther down the line.
“The appeal of venture capital careers for MBAs is clear: The firms identify opportunities, solve business problems, and create value for the startups they invest in — fundamental tenets of a business education. Positions require employees to work across functions (in finance, operations, marketing, human resources, and more) and prepare them well to launch their own business eventually, should they choose that path.
“But launching a career in venture capital straight out of business school can be a difficult proposition. VC openings are normally filled on a just-in-time basis. Internships are available, but they don’t always come with the potential for full-time offers. And when positions do open up, B-school students with no experience may have a challenging time stacking up against seasoned professionals.”

Ferrari
The Ferrari Way
News from Harvard Business School
“’If you drive a Ferrari, you put premium petrol in the tank, you hit the motorway, and you step on the gas.’ —Soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic
“That purring engine. The buttery soft leather. Those sleek curves. The essence of a Ferrari transcends any one particular design element to immerse its drivers in pure, unadulterated pleasure.
“’The overarching goal is to create an experience—a sensual experience,’ says Harvard Business School Professor Stefan Thomke, who wrote a case study about the company in 2018.”

What I Didn’t Know About HBS Faculty
News from HBS
“Khalid Alghimlas earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical and biological engineering from Colorado State University in 2011 and is a strategist and business development consultant. Khalid was born and raised in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, where oil was discovered. He went on to work at the largest oil company in the world, Saudi Aramco, prior to attending HBS. One of Khalid’s most profound experiences at HBS so far has been the relationship he has forged with faculty members. Here, Khalid shares his experience at HBS and the opportunities provided to him by Harvard faculty.
“After college, I joined Saudi Aramco where I worked as a process engineer, and later as a project engineer, helping to build one of the largest petrochemical facilities in the world. While working at Saudi Aramco I was selected to join one of the Government Vision 2030 realization programs under the Council of Economic and Development affairs. It was a once in lifetime experience and a transformational journey for me as well as for our nation. My year-long assignment afforded me the privilege of working with high level government officials and global company CEOs. The experience taught me that no one can go it alone and all great leaders depend on teams. It is a lesson I would take with me as I began to build my community here at HBS and a philosophy I will carry into my future careers. I learned that there are no limits but the ones we draw for ourselves and that the people you surround yourself with are truly important to your success and development.”
